A new recruitment video released by the sorority Alpha Phi at the University of Alabama has gone viral, attracting negative attention for being “racially homogeneous” and “hyper-feminine.”
While on first glance, the video appears to be a light-hearted way to attract new members to the sorority, A.L. Bailey, an opinion writer at AL.com, trashed the recruitment attempt and in the headline referred to it as “worse for women than Donald Trump.”
While Bailey admitted that a sorority is unlikely to be especially hospitable to feminist ideology, the opinion writer maintained that the sorority has some sort of obligation to enter the struggle for equal rights—even in a recruitment video.
Bailey found the seemingly unrelated video easily connectable to Trump’s run-in with Megyn Kelly at the Fox News debate, in which he later called her a “bimbo” on Twitter. In the way that the Kelly incident shows that it’s still difficult for women to be taken seriously, the “parade of white girls and blonde hair dye, coordinated clothing, bikinis and daisy dukes, glitter and kisses, bouncing bodies, euphoric hand-holding and hugging, gratuitous booty shots, and matching aviator sunglasses” apparently presents a bad example and damages the struggle for equal rights.
Bailey went on to complain that the video appears to be nothing more than a popularity contest, instead of an opportunity to display higher values, which according to Bailey would likely count as more racial diversity, a feminist aesthetic, and a lack of aviators.
Once the video went viral, the sorority pulled it from their YouTube page, but numerous copies have been reuploaded on different accounts. The sorority also took down its Facebook page.
