Smartphone dating app Tinder has released college-level data about its users, revealing which schools’ students are attracting the most coveted right swipes.
In the world of Tinder, users seeking dates (or casual hookups) are judged in a harsh manner, either validated with a coveted right swipe or tossed into oblivion with a left swipe. On Wednesday, Tinder’s company blog posted a summary of the right-swipe statistics for America’s colleges and universities. By taking the number of students aged 18-23 at each school and comparing it to the total number of right swipes those students had received, Tinder could determine which school’s students were the most attractive, or at least the most sought after.
Interestingly, the colleges with the highest swipe rates for women and men differ substantially. The top 50 list for girls is dominated by large public universities, with Florida State University holding the top spot along with similar institutes such as the University of Alabama, the University of Arizona, and Colorado State University. The only private colleges in the top 20 are the University of Miami (#2) and Texas Christian University (#13).
For men, on the other hand, religiously-affiliated schools fare very well, and there is a marked preference for the most prestigious institutions. The top four finishers are all religiously affiliated, with Catholic Georgetown University at #1, followed by Brigham Young, Notre Dame, and Texas Christian University. Four Ivy League schools are in the top 20, along with the Air Force and Naval Academies, as well as top public schools such as the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina.
The only school in the top 10 for both sexes is the University of Mississippi, finishing third for women and ninth for men.
It’s worth nothing that Tinder swipes likely reflect more than just the raw attractiveness of individual schools. For example, Brigham Young’s campus culture is strongly shaped by the Mormon church’s encouragement of early marriage, and a majority of students hope to find their spouse there. As a result, dating is very common, which may encourage aggressive right-swiping by students.
