Speaker of the House John Boehner announced Monday the elections for majority leader and whip will no longer be held on Oct. 8.

While Republicans will have a closed-door vote on who they will nominate for speaker of the House Thursday, the entire chamber won’t vote on Boehner’s replacement until Oct. 29.

The Ohio Republican’s successor will then schedule dates for the other leadership positions elections.

The extension gives more time for the GOP to weigh their options and find alternative candidates for the positions.

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is largely expected to fill Boehner’s shoes, although the California Republican was recently challenged by House Oversight Committee Chairman Kevin Chaffetz and Florida Rep. Daniel Webster.

Current Whip Steve Scalise announced Sunday he has whipped enough votes to win the position of majority leader. He is facing Georgia Rep. Tom Price, who has received key endorsements from Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling.

Reps. Pete Sessions, Patrick McHenry, Markwayne Mullin and Dennis Ross will face off for the third-ranking position.

Boehner unexpectedly announced late last month he will vacate his seat at the end of October.

“This new process will ensure House Republicans have a strong, unified team to lead our conference and focus on the American people’s priorities,” the speaker’s office said in a statement.
