Sinaloa Cartel drug boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera has been complaining to his lawyer he feels he is turning into a zombie because prison guards will not let him sleep.

One of El Chapo’s lawyers told Mexico’s Radio Formula the cartel leader is being subjected to “physical and mental torture.” Juan Pablo Badillo, one of the cartel kingpin’s lawyers, also told Radio Formula his client is not being allowed to spend enough time with him as he is legally entitled to.

Badillo went on to say he finds it unjust he can only see his client once a week and that visit is only for around 25 minutes, according to Badillo’s comments to Radio Formula. El Chapo alleges he is woken up by prison guards every two hours at night for roll call, according to Badillo.

El Chapo is being held in the now-infamous Altiplano prison. The reputation of the facility stems from El Chapo having escaped from there in July 2015 through an elaborate underground tunnel.

The cartel chief was recaptured by Mexican authorities Jan. 8. The drug trafficker’s legal team is fighting extradition requests that have been submitted by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Mexican legal system will allow El Chapo to fight extradition proceedings for several months.

The Justice Department is actively considering trying El Chapo in Brooklyn through the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. If El Chapo is tried in New York, he would be held in a prison which is connected to the federal court via underground tunnel.
