Sinaloa Cartel kingpin El Chapo’s sons had five Mexican soldiers murdered and hurt another 10 Friday in order to free their associate Oscar “El Kevin” Ortiz Vega.

Mexican Army soldiers were taking El Kevin to a hospital in an ambulance that was part of a military convoy when they were suddenly attacked by 60 gunmen linked to El Chapo’s sons, General Alfonso Duarte told media outlets Saturday.

This brazen attack comes after armed gunmen kidnapped and then freed one of El Chapo’s sons, Alfredo, in August. The Chapito was “caught off guard,” because he had “been partying a lot,” according to someone close to Alfredo.

El Kevin was on his way “to Culiacan for immediate medical attention … but unfortunately this group acts in a premeditated, cowardly, treacherous way, using firearms and grenades,” Duarte told the media. El Chapo’s brother brother Aurelio “El Guano” Guzmán Loera, has reportedly been fighting with the rival Beltran Leyva Organization “to control the means of drug production,” around the same location that authorities found the injured El Kevin.

Ever since he landed behind bars again in January, El Chapo’s criminal empire has been at risk of falling apart and his family members have been put on notice by rival cartel leaders. El Chapo’s 88-year-old mother’s home was ransacked by 150 cartel hitmen who wanted to frighten the old woman and make sure her son knew about it.

El Chapo is also dealing with his old boss from the Guadalajara Cartel Rafael Caro Quintero, who is out of prison and wants revenge against his former protege. Quintero told the media that his days as a cartel chief are behind him but many still suspect that he is out for revenge.

El Chapo is currently in prison and fighting against extradition to the U.S. to face a litany of federal drug trafficking charges. The Many of El Chapo’s his former rivals cannot wait to testify against him in a U.S. trial.
