President Barack Obama slammed GOP Rep. Darrell Issa for campaigning on bipartisanship, saying the California congressman targeted his administration without merit.

“Now, that is the definition of chutzpah,” Obama told a crowd at a private campaign event in San Diego Sunday evening.

“Here’s a guy who called my administration perhaps the most corrupt in history — despite the fact that actually we have not had a major scandal in my administration — that, when [Donald] Trump was suggesting that I wasn’t even born here, said, well, I don’t know, was not sure. We can pull up the quotes,” Obama said.

As chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Issa led investigations into the IRS audits targeting conservative groups, the Obama administration’s failed “Fast and Furious” gun program, and made the initial discoveries surrounding the Benghazi scandal.

Issa released a campaign ad last week touting his work on the Survivor’s Bill of Rights, legislation that protects rape victims, which Obama signed into law Oct. 7.

Obama said “Now, that is shameless” about the campaign ad, which shows the president signing the legislation and points out Issa’s contribution to the bill.

Obama took a lighter tack to praise Issa and other Republicans for their personal amiability. “To his credit, I will say that he has been very pleasant to me at our Christmas parties,” Obama said. “This is true — a number of Republican caucus members, like Michele Bachmann, they’ll show up and there’s like good cheer and bipartisanship for one evening.”

Issa has been in a contentious reelection campaign against Democrat and retired U.S. Marine Doug Applegate for the congressional seat.
