While many musicians reacted to early reports of his passing, some of his fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees held off until the “Free Fallin'” singer took his last breath.

“I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Tom’s passing, he’s such a huge part of our musical history, there’ll never be another like him,” Eric Clapton said in a statement.

“So sad about Tom Petty, he made some great music,” Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger wrote on Twitter. “Thoughts are with his family.”

“God bless Tom Petty peace and love to his family I’m sure going to miss you Tom,” Ringo Starr of The Beatles wrote.

“Devastating news about #TomPetty A profound loss,” Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash said in an Instagram post. “Sad sad day today. RIP.”

“Down here on E Street, we’re devastated and heartbroken over the death of Tom Petty. A great songwriter and performer, whenever we saw each other it was like running into a long lost brother. Our world will be a sadder place without him.”
