The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is now offering a workshop aimed at examining what it means to be white in America today.
Set to occur on Wednesday, “Unpacking Whiteness: A Workshop On Examining Whiteness And Focusing Your Work To End Systematic Racism” will investigate whether white people seek to learn more about racism, as well as if they feel uncomfortable in multiracial groups, according to the workshop’s description.
“Our ultimate goal is for our community to be a place where everyone can reach their full potential,” the description posits.
Workshop attendees will aim to deconstruct racial bias and reflect on racism in the workplace and elsewhere. The workshop also looks to determine how to produce “equitable outcomes in our personal and professional lives,” rather than equal opportunity.
“Participants in this workshop will engage in constructive and reflective conversations focused on examining and understanding racial bias and systemic racism,” workshop facilitators Lu Ferrell and Michele Holt-Shannon told Campus Reform. “The main purpose of the workshop is to provide space for folks to explore this topic and gain skills that will enable participants to become genuine partners in creating a community that is racially just,” they added.
UNH’s workshop comes after the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced that it will reintroduce the “Problem of Whiteness” course — part of the African Cultural Studies program — which makes its mission helping students “understand how whiteness is socially constructed and experienced in order to help dismantle white supremacy.” The class will also investigate how white people “consciously and unconsciously perpetuate institutional racism and how this not only devastates communities of color but also perpetuates the oppression of most white folks along the lines of class and gender.” (RELATED: University Offers ‘Problem Of Whiteness’ Class, Again).
