Roy Williams wasn’t thinking about basketball at all when he walked into his press conference ahead of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday. Like many of the golf fans out there, the North Carolina Tar Heels head coach was thinking about Tiger instead.

Obviously basketball is Williams’ first love, but his love of golf was obvious when he spoke to reporters the day before his defending champion Tar Heels take the court.

“My opening statement is I saw that Tiger Woods just birdied. He’s four under with a double bogey,” Williams said to get things started.

Unfortunately, nothing changed much for Tiger after the North Carolina coach’s update. He finished at four under par and tied for seventh place in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Still, Williams’ shout out only serves as more proof that Tiger is back in the hunt.

The Tar Heels are set to take the floor for their first round game against Lipscomb in Charlotte on Friday. After two consecutive trips to the Final Four and taking home the title last year, it will be interesting to see how far they make it this year.
