It turns out Uranus smells really bad, with an odor comparable to rotten eggs or farts, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

Uranus’ clouds have an unpleasant stench due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide, scientists confirmed, according to the Daily Mail. The researchers came to the conclusion by studying Uranus’ infrared light through the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. The international research team published their results in Nature: Astronomy Monday.

“We’ve strongly suspected that hydrogen sulfide gas was influencing the millimeter and radio spectrum of Uranus for some time, but we were unable to attribute the absorption needed to identify it positively,” said Glenn Orton, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

“If an unfortunate human were ever to descend through Uranus’ clouds, they would be met with very unpleasant and odiferous conditions,” University of Oxford’s study author Patrick Irwin said. However, the smell would not be the only debilitating factor for a human finding themselves on Uranus. Uranus is also quite chilly considering it is -392 degrees Fahrenheit (200 Celsius) on the planet, according to NASA. (UPDATE: NASA Captured 3-D Scans Of Jupiter’s Cyclones And They’re Terrifyingly Awesome [VIDEO])

Uranus is not believed to support life due to it’s frigid and gassy atmosphere.
