Japan is worried that Mount Fuji will cover Tokyo in with more than four inches of smoky black ash.
Japan fears that their iconic Mount Fuji, a 12,388-feet-tall active volcano, will cover their bustling city with black ash, the Daily Mail reported. If the active volcano erupts, it could halt water supplies and damage roads. The last eruption was in 1707.
“It would be no surprise if Mount Fuji erupts any time in the near future,” Toshiyasu Nagao, the head of Tokai University’s Earthquake Prediction Research Centre, told the AFP. Japan’s Mount Shimoe located on Kyushu island started having small eruptions in March. Mount Io also on Kyushu island erupted for the first time in 250 years in April, according to Japan Times.
Japan contributes as much as 10 percent of volcanic activity to the world with more than 110 active volcanoes. It also sits on the western part of the 25,000 foot horseshoe-shaped Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire has the most volcanic activity, with 75 percent of active volcanoes and 90% of earthquakes happening on this belt, according to National Geographic.
