Seven people are dead in the worst mass shooting in Australia in 22 years.

A family of seven people, including four children, was found dead on a rural property in Canberra on Friday. According to the Associated Press, police are not currently looking for a suspect and suggest the shooter is not at large.

Police were alerted to the incident by a phone call and arrived on scene to find the bodies of the family members and two guns.

“Police are currently responding to what I can only describe as a horrific incident,” Western Australia state Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said. “This devastating tragedy will no doubt have a lasting impact on the families concerned, the whole community and, in particular, the local communities in our southwest.”

The shooting is likely the worst mass shooting in Australia since the country implemented strict gun control laws, including a gun buyback program that have been widely praised by gun control advocates in the United States. Farmers are still allowed to own guns in Australia, and authorities have suggested that this rule is responsible for a higher rate of gun deaths in rural areas. (RELATED: Strict Gun Laws Have Made Australia ‘A Nation Of Victims’)
