CNN political analyst David Gregory said on Wednesday morning that people should not blame President Donald Trump for Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett.

ABC canceled Barr’s television program “Roseanne” just hours after she sent a racially tinged tweet. Critics noted that President Trump once bragged about Barr’s ratings on the program and suggested the president’s own rhetoric could have emboldened Barr.

However, Gregory rejected the connection between the two and asserted that Trump cannot be blamed for everything.

“President Trump cannot be blamed for everything that’s wrong in our culture. It is also a mistake to say, ‘oh, well, it’s the president’s fault that this kind of thing has been unleashed.’ This is a much bigger issue than President Trump,” Gregory said, arguing that social media in general has had a detrimental effect on the country’s discourse.

Gregory also insisted that it is “unfair” to suggest that Barr and her racist tweets represent the majority of Trump supporters.

“This is just someone who’s got a high profile as an actress who has somehow wrongly been elevated as the voice of Trump America — that’s unfair too,” he said.
