A new HBO documentary chronicles President Barack Obama’s final year in office — and the reactions by his top aides to Donald Trump’s shocking victory in 2016.
One particularly dramatic clip from “The Final Year” shows deputy national security adviser suffering shell shock right after it’s clear that Hillary Clinton had no chance of securing the Electoral College votes necessary to win.
“I came outside just to process all this,” Rhodes says to the camera. “I can’t even….ah…uh…I can’t…I mean I, I, I, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t put it into words, I don’t know what the words are.”

Prior to the scenes showing election night, Rhodes repeatedly expresses throughout the film his prediction that Clinton would easily beat Trump.
Directed by Greg Baker, the documentary particularly focusses on Obama’s foreign policy and depicts a number of seminal moments from the previous administration, including Secretary of State John Kerry negotiating the Iran Nuclear Deal and Obama’s speech marking the 71st anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.
According to HBO, the film “offers an insider’s look at key figures, including Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Ambassador Samantha Power, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes and National Security Advisor Susan Rice, as they sought to promote diplomacy and redefine how the U.S. confronts questions of war and peace, all while preparing to hand over the machinery of American power to a new administration.”
The documentary premiered on HBO on Monday, May 21.
