Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas ripped into the Democrats’ Keep Families Together Act, saying that it is is a vehicle for child trafficking in a Tuesday tweet.
“Children will be abducted & sold to drug cartels & slave-traders as a free ticket into US,” Cotton said in the tweet.

The Keep Families Together Act, introduced to the Senate by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, is the Democratic answer to the crisis of families being separated at the border. The bill, co-sponsored by every Democrat in the Senate, prohibits border officers “from removing a child from his or her parent or legal guardian” within 100 miles of the U.S. border. While the bill allows separation if it is determined that the child is a victim of human trafficking, it does not specify any requirements for proof of identification that the child is indeed traveling with his or her legal guardian.
Cotton previously criticized the bill, tweeting Tuesday that “Democrats don’t oppose family separation at the border, the oppose immigration enforcement at the border…Dems WANT them released into US.”
The bill does not say what should be done with families who attempt to cross the border illegally. However, the bill summary does state that agencies “may not remove a child from a parent or legal guardian solely for the policy goals of deterring migration to the United States or of promoting immigration law compliance.”
