The University of North Carolina has paid police $390,000 to defend a Confederate statue from protesters between June 2017 and June 2018.

UNC spent an additional $3,000 to “clean the monument after vandalism during the fiscal year” in a report obtained by Chapelboro.com. The $393,000 spent would have covered tuition for roughly 43 in-state students or 11 out-of-state students.

A few hundred people protested the school’s Silent Sam statue in August after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., and a history Ph.D. student allegedly smeared the statue with her own blood and ink in April. The student, Maya Little, faces a fall court date. (RELATED: UNC Student Smears Confederate Statue With Ink And Allegedly Her Own Blood [VIDEO])

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt wants to remove the statue, but believes that a 2015 North Carolina prohibits her from doing so.

Seventeen senior UNC faculty members threatened to tear the statue down themselves if the university did not take action.

“We do not fear arrest, indeed we welcome the opportunity to demonstrate the commitment that the Carolina faculty has to the wellbeing of its students and the principles that make this university great,” the professors said in a letter to Folt.

“Our chancellor and other university administrators understand that it would be reckless and irresponsible to act without the proper legal authority,” UNC senior Will Rierson told The Daily Caller News Foundation in February. “This has enraged many on the far left, but I am happy that the rule of law is being respected as we decide what to do with this important historical monument.”
