The world’s oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday with family in his hometown of Ashoro, Japan, Wednesday.

Masazo Nonaka, recognized by Guinness World Records in April as the world’s oldest man, celebrated his milestone with a birthday cake complete with a “113” candle on top, ABC News reported. Nonaka received many sweets and gifts for his birthday, his granddaughter Yuko Nonako said, according to ABC News.

Yuko Nonako claims her grandpa’s “free lifestyle” helped him live for so long. (RELATED: 112-Year-Old Japanese Man Shares His Secrets To A Long Life)

“Freedom is important to Masazo. He’s lived the way he wanted to live and has always done what he wanted to do,” Yuko Nonako told ABC News. Masazo Nonaka used to run his family’s 105-year-old hot springs inn but his granddaughter has since taken over, according to The Associated Press.

“We’re a close family and family is quite important to him,” Yuko Nonako said.

Masazo Nonako is an avid fan of sweets, watching sumo wrestling on television and reading newspapers, she added.

Kane Tanaka, also from Japan and is 115 years and 204 days old, is the world’s oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
