The U.S. indicted three Ukrainian hacker arrested in Europe who targeted more than 100 U.S. businesses and stole shoppers’ personal data, including credit and debit card numbers.
The suspects, Fedir Hladyr, Dmytro Fedorov and Andrii Kolpakov, are associated with FIN7, one the world’s most professional cyber crime groups known alternatively as the Carbanak Group or Navigators group. They were arrested between January and June of 2018, according to the U.S. State Department. The hacking group is known to have targeted Trump hotels, Chipotle, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Whole Foods, along with individual U.S. citizens. FIN7’s hacks of U.S. companies led to losses of tens of millions in revenue. The three Ukrainians were arrested in connection with those hacks. Hladyr is currently in U.S. custody and the U.S. is seeking the extradition of Fedorov and Kolpakov.
Adrian Nish, head of threat intelligence for BAE systems, said that the three men’s arrest will hopefully deter other hackers from targeting U.S. citizens and businesses, even if FIN7 is willing to employ hackers for that express purpose, according to Reuters. The hacking group is known to hire dozens of individuals and assigning them to specific targets from whom they steal payment data, which they then sell via the dark web.
BAE systems is one of several organizations that aid the FBI with information about cyber threats.
