Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison’s most recent allegations of domestic abuse come eerily close to a similar account from an ex-girlfriend nearly a decade ago, according to a comparison between both the current and former accounts.

Karen Monahan’s son accused Ellison of dragging his mother out of bed while also screaming expletives at her, about a week ago on Facebook. Years ago, Amy Alexander, an alleged ex-girlfriend, accused him of grabbing and threatening her.

Alexander allegedly had a romantic relationship with Ellison back in the 1990s while Ellison was married.

I succumbed to his romantic advances. In retrospect, this was one of the greatest mistakes of my life. Our hot and cold romance devolved into a love/ hate showdown by spring of 1994. Keith belittled me about my weight and constantly criticized my every word and action. He ostracized me from the community,” Alexander wrote in an op-ed for the Wright County Republican. (RELATED: DNC Silent As Deputy Chair Ellison Battle Domestic Abuse Allegations)

Alexander said Ellison allegedly went to her house, grabbed her, verbally abused her, and threatened her, back in 2005.

Ellison didn’t just refute the allegations, he denied ever having a relationship with Alexander.

He was running for Minnesota’s 5th District congressional seat in 2005, when he filed a a restraining order against her “as the culmination of her frustrated blackmail scheme and her long-standing, invidious efforts to damage” Ellison, according to the MPR News. Ellison accused both Alexander and freelance writer Mesa Kincaid of blackmail.

A year later, she filed a counter-restraining order, although it was dismissed.

She claimed that Ellison told her she would not be getting a job with the Environmental Justice Advocates Of Minnesota, a group he was affiliated with, during the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s city convention.

Ellison is running to be Minnesota’s attorney general, and the his primary election occurs on Tuesday.
