People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants to build a memorial on a Maine highway for thousands of lobsters who never made it to a dinner plate after an August accident saw the lobsters fall out of the back of a truck and die on the roadside.

As Fox News reports, the animal rights group thinks a headstone tribute — like the ones that serve as memorials to human crash victims – would be in order to remember the “countless sensitive crustaceans” who were victims to the fatal crash on Aug. 22.

According to local police, however, the body count is not exactly countless; they estimate around 4,500 perished, as the Portland Press Herald noted. PETA hopes to “remind everyone that the best way to prevent such tragedies is to go vegan.”

The tombstone would feature a picture of a lobster above the words, “In Memory of the Lobsters Who Suffered and Died at This Spot.”

Maine’s transport authorities have yet to approve PETA’s project, but department spokesman Ted Talbot informed the Press Herald that any sign cannot exceed dimensions of 4 feet by 8 feet. PETA’s proposed marker would be situated on Route 1, near Brunswick.

PETA is targeting states with a billboard campaign to shame people from eating lobsters and crabs as “part of a nationwide campaign to encourage diners to leave crabs and other sea animals off dinner plates and in their aquatic homes,” Fox News noted.
