Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas accused senatorial Democrats on Monday of smearing Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s character in order to further delay his confirmation to the Supreme Court.

“The Democrats are engaged in a campaign of delay and character assassination against Judge Kavanaugh,” Cotton tweeted. “It’s time to vote this week.”

Cotton’s comment was in response to the demands by multiple senate Democrats, including California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s ranking Democrat, to again postpone his confirmation hearing in light of a second accusation of sexual misconduct. (RELATED: Grassley Expresses Frustration Over Democrats’ ‘Political Takedown’ Of Kavanaugh)

Kavanaugh has vehemently denied both of the allegations.

“This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen,” Kavanaugh said Sunday. “The people who knew me then know that this did not happen, and have said so. This is a smear, plain and simple. I look forward to testifying on Thursday about the truth, and defending my good name.”

Senate Democrats have been attempting to delay Kavanaugh’s hearing since before it commenced. During the weekend, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly led a meeting with Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee members to coordinate a strategy for opposing the confirmation process.
