Washington State Cougars coach Mike Leach works some extremely late nights.

The Seattle Times recently published an amazing profile of one of America’s most popular football coaches, and every single word of it is amazing. It turns out he loves working well past the sun is down.

The Seattle Times wrote the following:

This will be a short day, unlike the past few. On Sundays and Mondays, the coaching staff stays until about 1 a.m., dissecting film of the upcoming opponent. On Tuesdays, the game plan is worked out, and the coaches finish about 11 p.m.

“It tapers off as the week goes on,” Leach says of the hours of preparation.

As somebody who has worked in sports, I can tell you that burning the midnight oil isn’t unheard of, but it’s not something every single coach does. It’s just not. Some will only do it under the rarest of situations. Trust me, I’ve seen it with my own eyes. (RELATED: The Latest AP College Football Poll Is Here. Number Two Might Have Your Head Spinning)

Leach working that late on a regular basis is very impressive. It’s one of many reasons why he has always punched well above his weight at WSU and prior at Texas Tech.

You can’t win with the talent that comes to WSU if you’re not willing to put in a ton of work. I mean, you need to put in a ton extra hours if you want to win at some of these less prestigious programs. That’s what Leach has done, and it’s worked out well.

He’s got the Cougars ranked 14th in America. That’s not too bad at all.
