Georgetown University professor of sociology Michael Eric Dyson said racism has been passed down “like heritage” and then called on white people to fix it on MSNBC’s “Velshi & Ruhle” Tuesday.
The show’s political panel was discussing the upcoming runoff election between GOP Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy when Dyson
“When white people are able to overcome the racism that has been passed on to them like heritage, they will then be able to forge connections with black and brown and poor white people together to really have a different sense of destiny in Mississippi,” Dyson said.

Dyson also said African-Americans and white people in Mississippi have more in common than they realize and encouraged them to work together to “overcome the racial divide.”
“Poor schooling is something that is African-American and poor white people [sic] — so if we can address the issues of poor environment, the economic downturn, the lack of flourishing they’re experiencing even in the physical geography — the point is if they can join together with other people who have similar economic interests and overcome the racial divide, the state itself will flourish in a way that will not be possible if they maintain the racial hostility that is there now,” he said.
