HBO’s hit show “True Detective” is returning in a couple weeks for a third season, but it’s not exactly blowing people away.
As many of you already know, I am a massive fan of the crime drama series. I thought the first season was one of the greatest seasons of television ever made and that the second season was underrated. Was the second run as good as Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson? Well, it turns out season three might not knock our socks off, according to a review from The Hollywood Reporter. In an attempt not to spoil anything, I’m not going to dive too far into their review, but I will link to a bit of it.
THR wrote the following in its review:
It sometimes takes shows five or 10 years to show you their best and worst sides, but True Detective arrives for a third installment seeming to have already established its peaks and valleys. As a vehicle for actors and mood, few shows are better, and with Ali front and center, the new season is easy to get interested in, despite a lackluster mystery that may make it a struggle to stay interested.
Yikes, that review doesn’t exactly make you want to rush out and see the show. I love Mahershala Ali, and it sounds like he did just fine in the new season. However, I’m not super excited about a “lackluster mystery” in the Ozarks that will apparently be a “struggle to stay interested.”
That doesn’t sound like good news at all.
You can catch the third season on HBO Jan. 13. Let’s hope for all our sakes that it’s a lot more interesting and inspiring than how THR described it.
I expect greatness out of “True Detective” and anything less is unacceptable.
