Demaryius Thomas is officially a free agent.

There had been reports early Tuesday that the Houston Texans would be cutting him, and the team made it official late Tuesday afternoon. (RELATED: Texans Expected To Cut Receiver Demaryius Thomas)

By sending the talented but injured receiver packing, Houston saved the $14 million they would have had to pay him next year.

Well, this shouldn’t be too shocking to anybody. After all, the NFL is a business, and paying $14 million to a guy who tore his achilles isn’t exactly great business. That’s just the fact of the matter.

Now, we’ll have to wait and see if anybody scoops up Thomas, who was traded to Houston from Denver this past season. My guess is that there will be multiple teams that pick up the phone to give him a call. As long as he can prove he still has some gas in the tank, then he won’t be waiting for a job for long.

Thomas is borderline unstoppable when he’s at the top of his game. Now, will he ever return to that level once he gets healthy? Only time will tell, but we all know he can play.

The Texans now get to spend that $14 million elsewhere, and Thomas gets a fresh start. It seems like the best case scenario for everybody involved.
