Republican Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw revealed to fellow Republican Rep. Sean Duffy of Wisconsin on Wednesday how his “Saturday Night Live” appearance transpired in November.

Crenshaw joked that due to his early bedtime he wasn’t awake when “SNL” initially aired, but he woke up the next morning to a handful of texts from his friends letting him know that he had finally “made it.”

“I was like ‘oh great’ and then I watched it and I was like ‘oh, that’s bad,'” Crenshaw said while appearing on Duffy’s “Plaidcast” podcast.

Crenshaw, a retired lieutenant commander, was thrown into the spotlight the weekend prior to Election Day after SNL’s Pete Davidson mocked him during the show for the injuries he sustained while fighting for America.

He didn’t initially respond but instead watched the media’s reaction throughout the day. Hours later, Crenshaw tweeted: “Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope [“SNL”] recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.”

“What I realized was I couldn’t just be like ‘I don’t care,'” Crenshaw said. “There were a lot of people who were deeply offended for me, and frankly understandably so, especially the veteran community who felt that it had gone too far.” (RELATED: Dan Crenshaw Blasts The ‘Dysfunction And Dishonesty’ Of The Border Wall Debate)

“It wasn’t the joke about being a hitman in a porno, like, that was weird — it brought up a lot of questions. You’re just wondering what the heck he’s talking about. But then he goes and says, ‘I know he’s a wounded warrior or whatever,’ and it was the ‘whatever’ that was what set people off,” he continued. “I do have to cater to that. I have to defend that.”

The Texas congressman was finally convinced to appear on “SNL” the following weekend, which happened to be Veterans Day weekend, to give a message of unity and connection.

After Duffy complimented Crenshaw on his comedic timing, he revealed that filmmaker Steven Spielberg attended his taping of the show and also gave him the same compliment.

“I swear to you, [Spielberg] was behind the scene. He was there,” Crenshaw said. “I got a compliment from the one guy, I mean, it really matters to get a compliment from!” (RELATED: Dan Crenshaw Responds To Beto’s Teeth Cleaning: You’re Not Cool, You’re ‘Weird’)

“I actually brought my wife over and I was like ‘Mr. Spielberg, can you please repeat what you just said with my wife right here? Because I seriously need a witness for this,'” he continued. “So I do have a witness. This did happen. I got a compliment from Spielberg.”
