The House of Representatives has given a thumbs-up to voting rights for illegal immigrants.

Democrats voted overwhelmingly Friday to approve voting rights for illegal immigrants in local elections, the Washington Times reports. The Democratic-controlled House was also assessing the “For the People Act,” a provision of their first legislative measure, which contains a variety of liberal policy measures.

The act would create a code of ethics for the Supreme Court, require presidential candidates to submit tax returns and control the way small campaigns obtain funds.

In a 228-197 vote, Democrats opposed a Republican motion to condemn voting by illegal immigrants. For Democrats, the vote was about allowing more people to participate in the political process — even if they are in the country illegally. “We are prepared to open up the political process and let all of the people come in,” Georgia Democrat Rep. John Lewis told the House.

Lewis’s words reflected those of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who said this week:

So, when we talk about newcomers, we have to recognize the constant reinvigoration of America that they are, that we all have been – our families … And these newcomers make America more American. And we want them, when they come here, to be fully part of our system. And that means not suppressing the vote of our newcomers to America.

Republicans were aghast. Texas Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw wondered, “What kind of government would cancel the vote of its own citizens, and replace it with non-citizens?” (RELATED: Voting For Democrats Gives Leverage To Illegals)

Although a federal statute officially bars illegals from voting in federal elections, that doesn’t apply to municipal elections and many of the same locales that have proclaimed themselves sanctuary cities are also promoting the voting of illegal aliens. For example, San Francisco allows illegals to participate in school board elections.
