Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joked Tuesday about White House advisor Jared Kushner’s use of WhatsApp messaging to conduct official business, saying, “‘What’s next? Nuclear codes in Instagram DMs?”

The freshman congresswoman made the comments during a hearing regarding Kushner’s reported use of the messaging app to conduct official business.

Ocasio-Cortez accused the Trump administration of “not cooperating” and argued that subpoenas would be necessary in order to get to the bottom of the issue.

“Every day that there is an insecure line of communication that could be leaked, that could be hacked, that could be screen-shotted — without proper channels — is a day that we put our national security at risk,” she said.

Kushner recently came under fire for reportedly using WhatsApp to conduct official business — and his attorney Abbe Lowell claimed that he used screenshots to preserve conversations for record-keeping purposes. Since Kushner’s WhatsApp use came to light, a number of people have criticized him and called for answers. CNN’s Erin Burnett argued that the app was often specifically used by people who did not want their messages to be traced. House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings called for Tuesday’s hearing in order to investigate the matter more fully.
