A crowd of Laguna Beach residents in California began singing the national anthem Tuesday after the city approved a patriotic design for its police vehicles.

Council members voted Tuesday night to keep the red, white and blue lettering, despite backlash from those who said it was too aggressive.

“I have to say I am so proud of California. I’m so proud that patriotism is alive and well in this state,” political commentator Tomi Lahren told “Fox & Friends” Wednesday.

“We are not a lost cause and we’re going to keep fighting for this country and for our patriotic beliefs, even here in California,” she continued.

California Councilman Steve Dicterow appeared on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday to address the backlash, and said the American flag should inspire hope and unity instead of fear and anger.

“I believe that the flag is a symbol of equality and of freedom, and it’s that very freedom that our police are protecting,” he said. (RELATED: California Councilman Addresses Backlash Over American Flag Themed Police Cars)

The city council made the decision in a 4-1 vote.
