U.S. Women’s Soccer Team co-captain Megan Rapinoe admitted her father may have voted for President Donald Trump despite her progressive politics.
Rapinoe criticized her parents’ political leanings in an interview published Saturday by The Guardian.
“I feel like I grew up with all of these lessons [about equality], but nothing was ever spoken. No language was ever put around it. Both of my parents should be really progressive, especially my mom, and I don’t get that they’re not. I’m always saying, ‘You guys should really be Democrats!’ But they’re not, so what’s happening?”
“I’m very similar to how [my parents] are, even though I think my dad voted for Trump,” she continued, “I’ll say, ‘I don’t get it. How are you simultaneously as proud as punch of me, and watching Fox News all the time, [who are doing] takedowns of your daughter?'” (RELATED: Megan Rapinoe Defends Decision To Protest During The National Anthem)
“That’s why I’m like, ‘You guys need to go to therapy,'” Rapinoe added.
The star soccer player has been open about her thoughts on the current administration and refused to visit the White House after winning the 2019 World Cup.
At the time, President Trump criticized Rapinoe’s comments and actions.
“Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team,” Trump tweeted back in June. “Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!”
