“Rage Against The Machine” guitarist Tom Morello played for a crowd of union members Monday during an annual convention hosted by the Teamsters.

Morello is best known for helping form the bands “Rage Against the Machine” and “Audioslave.” He has also been very politically active and has supported labor movement political positions. The Teamsters union hosted the guitarist during its annual conventions in Las Vegas.

“For me the music is the message and the message is solidarity,” Morello said during the convention, according to the Teamsters. “I’m a union man.”

Morello performed for the crowd his 2011 song “Union Town,” which he wrote during his solo act “The Nightwatchman.” The song was written in support of the labor movement and the political causes it supports. Teamsters President James Hoffa praised the performance for electrifying members and the union cause.

The convention started Saturday and is expected to last until Friday. The gathering helps unite membership while providing union leadership the ability to discuss critical political issues that they can amend as official union positions. Leadership this year has thus far discussed income inequality, public-sector organizing and how to best recruit nonmembers into union ranks.
