During Wednesday’s Commander-in-Chief forum on NBC, Donald Trump said he is open to letting illegal immigrants “who want to serve in the US armed forces” stay in the country legally.

“I think that when you serve in the armed forces, that’s a very special situation, and I could see myself working that out. Absolutely,” Trump said in response to a question from Army Captain Sue Fulton.

“So she’s saying have already served in the armed forces or plans to serve?” Matt Lauer asked in clarification of the original question.

After Fulton reaffirmed she indeed meant “plan to serve,” Trump again stated that serving in the military is a “very special thing.”

“If they plan on serving, if they get in, I would absolutely hold those people — we have to be careful, we have to vet very carefully, everyone would agree with that — but the answer is it would be a very special circumstance, yes.”
