Republican lawmakers in the House are calling on President Barack Obama to stop his efforts to weaken sanctions placed on Iran during his final days in the White House.

In a letter sent to the president Tuesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and  House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce encouraged Obama to sign legislation extending the Iran Sanction Act for another decade.

“We respectfully request that your administration take no further actions designed to bolster international investment in Iran, or otherwise change or alter the existing sanctions regime within international organizations through the use of waivers or through administrative actions to include the issuance of new regulations, general licenses, frequently asked questions, or other guidance,” they wrote.

Republicans have been largely critical of the Iran Nuclear Deal since Obama spearheaded negotiations, fearing it would provide the country funds to continue its program of state-sponsored terror.

Iran is currently in breach of the agreement, seeking illegal nuclear technology and still testing nuclear-capable missiles.

If the Obama administration chooses to take strides to solidify the nuclear agreement, it would undermine the incoming administration’s ability to deal with the issue, the congressman argued.

“In your speech on Wednesday, November 9, you admirably committed to ensuring a smooth transition to the next administration,” they continued. “President-elect Trump deserves the opportunity to assess the United States policy toward Iran without your administration imposing or implementing additional measures that could complicate the incoming administration’s ability to develop its policy.”
