Gay activists aren’t happy with the potential repeal of North Carolina’s bathroom law, believing it will still allow discrimination against the gay community.
As North Carolina lawmakers gear up to repeal the law — which prohibits transgenders from using the bathroom of their choice — gay organizations have protested the potential repeal as a “double down on discrimination,” Fox News reported Thursday.
Democrat and Republican lawmakers have finally reached a deal they both like. State legislators are expected to repeal House Bill 2, the state’s bathroom law, but keep a measure that allows the state to regulate public bathrooms.
City governments are also prevented from passing discrimination clauses on sexual orientation until December 2020 under the new repeal deal.
The Human Rights Campaign spoke out against the bill, calling it a “bad deal,” while Equality NC’s executive director said it would allow continued discrimination of gay people.
“Make no mistake: This newest #HB2 proposal is a bad deal that does not actually #RepealHB2. Instead, it doubles-down on discrimination,” the Human Rights Campaign tweeted early Thursday morning.
Some people protested outside the Executive Mansion, demanding Democratic lawmaker stop the law. At the time, Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper was meeting with Democrats to get their support of the measure.
Republican leaders stated their pleasure with the bill, after a months-long fight between both parties as to how to proceed in repealing the law.
“Compromise requires give and take from all sides, and we are pleased this proposal fully protects bathroom safety and privacy,” Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore said in a statement.
Leaders are expected to vote on the repeal Thursday.
