Today must be the day of sales on obscure kitchen tools. Shortly after learning about the pastry cutter that is 88 percent off, I found out about this deal on a cheese grater rotary. What’s a cheese grater rotary, you ask? It’s that funny little device the servers at Italian restaurants use after asking if you want Romano cheese on your asparagus or whatever.

I never really thought of those things existing outside of Italian restaurants, but I see how they could be useful in a kitchen. And when the 4.4-star $90 model is on sale for under 20 bucks, it just makes sense.

The reviews are overwhelmingly positive. This one’s at the top:

This is an all-around excellent product. The construction is very durable. It’s very easy and intuitive to assemble and the locking mechanism not only holds it all in place, but it’s also easy to pop out the lock (with no worry about it popping out by accident). The ability to flip between left and right-handed grips not only makes easier for a household with left and right-handed people; it also lets you switch between hands if one gets sore and you have a lot of cheese to grate. The open layout of the grater also makes it mostly easy to clean except for the inside of the grating cylinder which is a bit small.

If I were to nitpick, I’d say it wouldn’t hurt to have a rubber grip on the handle, especially for harder cheeses. On the other hand, a softer cheese will have a very thin part slip through the mechanism. I’d also say you should avoid this if you have very bad arthritis (mine is fairly bad, but I can manage), but I’d say that about all manual cheese graters, hand-crank or otherwise. Nitpicks aside, however, this is definitely a 5-star product and a solid value for the money, even without Prime free shipping.

Another one is titled “Cheese Grater: This is the One”:

We bought another cheese grater before, but it was plastic and it didn’t last too long, before the hinges broke, and it was very difficult to disassemble to clean. This one is sturdier, and easier to take apart the drum and the handle to wash them. We couldn’t be happier with our purchase.

Yet another titles his “Perfect grater!”:

Perfect grater! After a thorough search I chose this grater over the plastic ones because it is 18/8 stainless steel; several others say only “stainless steel” or have other unrecognizable qualifiers (e.g., ). Have a similar grater that was my mother’s and just love the ease of use of a rotary and the size of the cheese shreds. Unfortunately, my mom’s is now obviously a lower quality metal and after probably 50 years of use is starting to leave dark streaks on the cheese; yuk! I did purchase a “used” grater which was probably just an open box and was in perfect condition; i would wash before using anyway. Even a new grater at full price is well worth the price. Free shipping was faster than expected and arrived in perfect condition.
This grater is certainly superior quality and is substantially heavier than my mom’s. This grater also has a clip that holds in the drum; a very nice feature that makes it easier to firmly hold the cheese chunk in the hopper for a more even grate. The drum fits well in the hopper so there are just a few thin slices left – nice for a snack for the cook. I was quite surprised that this grater operates so much more smoothly than my mom’s lower quality; operation really is almost effortless. The grater drum also has a very thin silicone (?) strip on each edge to prevent metal scraping on metal.
I did wash this grater in the silverware basket of the dishwasher with the drum down in the basket and there were a couple bits of cheese left; next time i will put the drum facing up.
Finally, put softer cheese (e.g., mozzarella) in the freezer for (only) 10-15 minutes so it grates more easily; this does not affect the flavor in my opinion.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the IBEET Cheese Grater.

I think you get the point.
