Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) said if the James Comey memo is real, it would be proof of President Trump obstructing justice.
The New York Times reported yesterday that they were read a memo written by former FBI Director James Comey that alleges Trump asked him to stop investigating national security advisor Michael Flynn.
The Hill asked Amash Wednesday if the contents of the memo would be grounds for impeachment if it turned out they were true.
“Yes,” Amash responded. “But everybody gets a fair trial in this country.”
Amash tweeted Tuesday night that the allegations in the memo are “incredibly serious” and require Comey to testify in front of the House.

Another reporter asked Amash if he had more confidence in Trump or in Comey.
“I think it’s pretty clear I have more confidence in Director Comey,” he said.
Amash has called for an independent commission to investigate Russia’s role in the U.S. election, making him just one of two Republicans to do so.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this piece referenced Amash as the first Republican congressman to raise the possibility of impeachment. On Tuesday evening, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) noted that if Trump is guilty of obstruction of justice, then that could and should be considered an impeachable offense.
