Will Graham Mertz get a shot to be the starting quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers in 2020?

This is a question fans have debated nonstop heading into the upcoming season. After arriving in Madison as the most hyped freshman in program history, Mertz took a redshirt in 2019 and Jack Coan started every game for the 10-4 Badgers. Now, people want to know if he’ll start in 2020. I’m pretty sure I have the answer, and fans won’t like it.

Jack Coan will be the starting quarterback for Wisconsin in 2020. He’s not losing his job his senior season. Now, things might be different if the Badgers had an entire spring practice.

We didn’t because coronavirus canceled it unfortunately. Still, even if we had, I’m not sure Mertz would have beat out Coan.

Paul Chryst loves experience, Coan has plenty of it and the senior is a very solid quarterback. If Jack Coan is healthy, then Chryst is going to ride with him.

That’s just the way it’s going to be unless Mertz can close the gap in August, which seems unlikely if we’re being completely realistic.

It’s just not enough time.

Now, I do think we will see a lot more of Mertz in 2020. Now that his redshirt is behind him, I think there’s a great chance Chryst gives him more reps.

Think of when we had Alex Hornibrook and Bart Houston playing at the same time. I could see a similar situation unfolding here.

Either way, Wisconsin fans need to accept Coan will almost certainly open the season as the starter. Things could change, but this is 100% Coan’s job for the time being.
