EXCLUSIVE: Pastor Who Was Threatened With Jail For Violating COVID-19 Orders Sounds Off On Officials Over Floyd Protests

A Massachusetts pastor is calling out some in the media, lawmakers, and health officials for their “hypocritical” responses to the George Floyd protests amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Adams Square Baptist Church pastor Kris Casey was slapped with a criminal complaint, hit with fines and threatened with jail time for violating the governor’s March 23 coronavirus order preventing gathers of more than 10 people.

“Do I obey God or the governor’s ruling?” said Casey.

For months Americans were told to “stay home” to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, but now some health experts and public officials are staying silent when it comes to the large demonstrations. Some are actually encouraging them by saying social justice matters more than social distancing, yet most states are just in the initial steps of reopening safely. Massachusetts entered into its phase 2 of its plan to reopen this week. Places of worship are permitted to hold services but only at 40 percent capacity, according to Casey.

“We’re already probably at max 40 percent but as a pastor I’m not going to turn people away from coming to church so if we have 300 people show up, I don’t know that I’m going to turn people away and that’s the frustrating thing, is that who do I obey?” Casey said. “You know if everyone is wearing a mask inside, what’s the probability that they’re going to spread the virus, nil, you know and so if I can have church and have everybody safe, sanitized and socially distanced but yet they’re not doing it at the rallies then that is extreme hypocrisy.”
