Robot Shows Off Basketball Shooting Skills At The Olympics

A robot was seen on video showing off its basketball skills during halftime at the Tokyo Olympics Sunday, video shows.

The robot was wearing a jersey while making shots on video during halftime of the U.S.-France game in Tokyo, Japan.

CUE, the first version of the robot, was developed by Toyota in 2018, according to the company’s website. The initial version of the robot needed three minutes to reboot between shots.

Toyota later developed CUE2, unveiled at the half-time show of the match in November 2018, and scored a three-point throw, according to the site. The third version, CUE3, set a Guinness world record in 2019 for the “most consecutive basketball free throws by a humanoid robot.”

The U.S. team later lost that game to France 83-76, where they were heavy favorites to win.

The TV ratings for the opening ceremony for the Olympics in Japan were the lowest ratings in 33 years with only 16.7 million viewers.

The International Olympic Committee announced Wednesday morning that Brisbane, Australia, will host the 2032 competition. The country previously hosted the games twice, with Sydney in 2000 and Melbourne in 1956.
