“The perpetrator himself is dead,” Mannheim police said in a tweet. The gunman shot and killed himself, local German broadcasting company SWR reported. The attacker was also allegedly in possession of a backpack containing more weapons.

The attacker was reportedly a student at the university, according to ABC News. Initially, there is no indication for the shooter’s motivation.

One of the shooter’s victims died in a hospital from injuries sustained during the attack, according to the BBC.

Police originally urged civilians to steer clear of the campus as they mounted a “large scale” response to the attack, according to The Washington Post. Heidelberg is the oldest German university.
