A Connecticut mother allegedly strangled her three children before hanging herself Wednesday, according to reports.

The incident unfolded around 6:30 p.m., when authorities responded to a single family home on Whaley Street in Danbury for a welfare check, according to the New York Post. Authorities had received a call from someone who was “distraught and crying,” police said, according to The Patch.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered 36-year-old Sonia Loja dead from what is suspected to be asphyxia by hanging, the NY Post reported, citing police. Authorities also found her three children, 12-year-old Junior Panjon, 10-year-old Joselyn Panjon and 5-year-old Jonael Panjon, deceased at the scene.

“Pending an official autopsy, preliminary findings indicate that Ms. Loja strangled her three children before killing herself,” Danbury police said in a statement, according to the NY Post. “However, this is still an active investigation.” (RELATED: Police Charge Man For Allegedly Killing Wife On Honeymoon After Her Body Is Found In Hotel Room)

Loja and her children lived with two other adults who were not present at the time, according to the NY Post.

Mayor Dean Esposito called the situation a “truly horrible event.”

“In the coming days, mental health and counseling services will be provided through collaboration with the Danbury Public Schools and the City of Danbury,” Esposito reportedly said. “Our community grieves for the innocent lives taken from us. We will get through this together.”
