MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough said Jesus Christ never had a view on abortion in a Friday segment accusing pro-life Christians’ of “perverting the gospel.”

The “Morning Joe” panel played a segment of Republican South Carolina state Sen. Katrina Shealy rejecting the state legislature’s attempt to pass a six-week abortion ban without exceptions for rape and incest, accusing the supporters of the legislation of “mis-communicating with God.” Scarborough praised her remark and claimed Jesus never talked about abortion in the gospel.

“As a Southern Baptist, I grew up reading the Bible, maybe backslidden Baptist, but I still know the Bible. Jesus never once talked about abortion, never once and it was happening back in ancient times, it was happening back in his time. Never once mentioned it and for people perverting the gospel of Jesus Christ down to one issue, it’s heresy.”

The “Morning Joe” host then accused pro-life Christians of “overlooking” parts of the Bible to force raped children to carry their own children to term. He referred to the 10-year-old girl impregnated from rape who underwent an abortion in Indiana after her state of Ohio forbade her from ending the pregnancy. “If you don’t believe me, if that makes you angry, why don’t you do something you haven’t done in a long time. Open the Bible, open the New Testament, read the red letters. You won’t see it there. And yet there are people who are using Jesus as a shield to make 10-year-old raped girls go through a living and breathing hell here on Earth. They’ve also conveniently overlooked the parts of the New Testament where Jesus talks about taking care of the needy. Taking care of [the] helpless, who live a hopeless life. Because they believe, these state legislatures believe, that life begins at fertilization and ends at childbirth.”

Many Christian denominations oppose abortion and commonly teach that human life begins at conception. The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is a “moral evil” and “gravely wrong,” according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Southern Baptist Convention reaffirmed in a 1996 resolution that all on-demand abortions are “wrong” since they recognize that all human life is sacred.
