If Republicans Are So Out Of Touch, Why Do Democrats Keep Defecting?

Democrats from the president on down love to bash Republicans as out of touch. Republicans want to cut taxes for the rich, hollow out the middle class, and drag the country race relations back to before the Civil War — or so it is said. But if Republicans are indeed so out of touch, why have a string of Democratic officials from across the country switched parties this year?
