A Dunkin’ franchise in Metro Atlanta has agreed to pay $3 Million to a woman who suffered severe burns after a coffee spill incident in 2021.

The settlement was reached following a lawsuit filed by the injured party, WSB-TV reported Wednesday. The incident occurred at a Dunkin’ location on Nelson Brogdon Blvd. in Sugar Hill, Georgia, in February of 2021. The then-70-year-old woman visited the establishment, and as she was handed her coffee, the lid allegedly came off, causing the scalding liquid to spill over her legs and chest. The incident resulted in second and third-degree burns on her thighs, groin, and abdomen, necessitating skin grafts and intensive medical treatment.

The severity of her injuries was such that she had to spend weeks in the burn unit at Grady Health and undergo significant lifestyle changes. Benjamin Welch, an attorney from Morgan & Morgan, representing the injured party, emphasized the impact of the incident. “Her burns were so severe that she spent weeks in the burn unit at Grady Health and has had to entirely alter the way she lives her life,” Welch said in a statement, the outlet added. The franchise responsible for the incident, Golden Donuts, LLC, has chosen to settle the matter by agreeing to pay the former federal government employee a substantial sum of $3 million. This settlement takes into account not only the pain and suffering endured by the victim but also the considerable medical bills she incurred, which have already reached $200,000 since the incident.
