Kevin Costner and Matthew McConaughey may need to step aside as rumors erupted in April that Michelle Pfeiffer was more than vying for the lead role in the “Yellowstone” franchise’s next big project.
As we told you back in February, Pfeiffer is tipped to be taking over the helm of the upcoming “Yellowstone” spin-off, currently titled “2024.” The spin-off is the first for the future of the “Yellowstone” ranch, coming after such prequel hits as “1884” and “1923.” Rumors and reports initially named McConaughey as the expected lead for whatever Taylor Sheridan creates for the series. But now Pfeiffer might be stepping into his Stetson.
“Michelle is primed for big, big things and the mood is the franchise will go a different route and embrace girl power and move with the times,” an insider told Life&Style.

McConaughey is still reportedly stalling when it comes to signing a deal to lead the franchise. “Matthew’s stalling could really cost him, and he still hasn’t inked a deal. Kevin’s return isn’t set in stone either — and he’s only going to get a cameo at best, thanks to hard-line tactics, so the coast is clear for Michelle to take over,” the source continued.

Pfeiffer could be exactly what “Yellowstone” needs to seriously move forward as a franchise. Though I believe Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and the Bunkhouse Boys — particularly Jimmy — need their own spin-off series too, there’s no telling who from the original show will survive through to the next iteration. We’re supposed to see the last episodes of “Yellowstone” in November. Whether that will actually happen is anyone’s guess.
